How To Choose Your Kids Bike?

From toddlers to teens, choosing a kids’ bike means thinking about balance, learning, size, safety and comfort.

You should choose your kids’ bike based on 3 criteria: your child’s age, their height, and how they will use their bike.

1/ The Age

Whether it’s a balance bike, one with stabilisers, or your child’s first mountain bike, there’s a bike for every age! Children can start learning to ride a tricycle or balance bike (a bike without wheels) from the age of two. In order to learn to ride “like a grown-up”, kids between the ages of three and five can use bikes with stabilisers (12 and 14 inches) and balance bikes that can be converted.

2/ THE HEIGHT

Besides your child’s age, size is a major factor when choosing a kids’ bike. In order to learn properly, kids need to feel at ease on their bike. The size is given in inches and corresponds to the diameter of the wheels.

When your child is learning to ride a bike, you need to make sure the bike is the right size for their height and age. This will make learning faster and more fun for your budding cyclist.

Bike sizes vary from 10 to 24 inches.
Depending on your child’s height they will need the following size of bike.

Between 85 cm and 1 m: 10-inch bike (tricycles and balance bikes)

Between 90 cm and 1.05 m: 12- and 14-inch bikes (balance bikes that turn into real bikes).

Between 1.05 m and 1.20 m: 16-inch bike.

Between 1.20 m and 1.35 m: 20-inch bike.

Between 1.35 m and 1.55 m: 24-inch bike.

To help you choose, take a look at the size chart on our website or in your local store.

3/ USAGE
From the age of six, kids start using their bikes differently. Whether it’s a hybrid, mountain or BMX bike, you will need to refine your choice. There are different kinds of hybrid bike available depending on whether you cycle in cities or in the countryside, with features such as a low step through, accessories such as a basket or panniers, a comfy saddle, mudguards, etc.
For riding on slightly rougher terrain, a mountain bike is best.BMX models are best used in state parks.
